Report: Facebook's privacy lapses may result in record fine

Jan 19, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook may be facing the biggest fine ever imposed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for privacy violations involving the personal information of its 2.2 billion users. The FTC is considering hitting Facebook with a penalty that would top its previous record fine of $22.5 million , which it dealt to Google in 2012 for bypassing the privacy controls in Apple's Safari browser, according to The Washington Post. The story published Friday cited three unidentified people familiar with the discussions. In an automated response, the FTC said it was unable to comment, citing its closure due to...

Chinese ambassador warns Canada to stop rallying allies

Jan 19, 2019

TORONTO — China's ambassador to Canada warned the Canadian government Thursday to stop recruiting international support in its feud with China and threatened retaliation if Canada bans Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei for security reasons. Ambassador Lu Shaye said last month's arrest of a top Huawei Technologies executive was an act of "backstabbing" by a friend and he warned of repercussions if Canada bars the firm from its new 5G network. He said it would be a bad idea for Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland to use next week's World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, to press for support against...

Scientists: Saturn spent billions of years without its rings

Jan 19, 2019

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Saturn may have flown solo for billions of years — almost its entire existence — before getting its stunning set of rings, a new study suggests. An Italian-led team reported Thursday in the journal Science that Saturn's primary rings appear to be just 10 million to 100 million years old. The gas giant Saturn, on the other hand, is 4.5 billion years old, like all the other planets in our solar system. The findings are based on data collected by NASA's Cassini spacecraft while repeatedly diving between Saturn and its rings in 2017, shortly before its...

Hyundai, Kia recall vehicles due to increased fire risk

Jan 19, 2019

DETROIT — Despite a government shutdown, Hyundai and Kia are moving ahead with a recall of about 168,000 vehicles to fix a fuel pipe problem that can cause engine fires. The problem stems from improper repairs during previous recalls for engine failures. The affiliated Korean automakers have been dogged by fire and engine failure complaints from across the nation. They're both under investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has been trying to figure out whether initial recalls covered enough vehicles. But the agency is mostly closed due to the shutdown. In addition to the recall, each...

Sinclair debuts streaming service for its local TV stations

Jan 19, 2019

NEW YORK — Sinclair Broadcast wants to "Stirr" up streaming. The nation's largest owner of television stations launched a free, ad-supported streaming service Wednesday drawing on local news, sports and other programs from the 191 TV stations it owns in 89 U.S. markets. Sinclair said the motivation behind Stirr is in part to help viewers "access the local news and lifestyle programming that is relevant to their everyday life." Sinclair was admonished by media watchdogs in April after the sports news service Deadspin pieced together clips of dozens of TV anchors for Sinclair reading from the same script. The script...
